Good Listening
Are You Good At Listening?
Mission:
To provide an environment,
for individuals as well as groups, to discuss sensitive issues regarding
race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, religion, class, gender and
disabilities. Trained Listening Partners are ready and available to
listen to individuals, as well as, facilitate discussions that help
individuals listen to each other. The Trained Listening Partners are
committed to providing comfortable and neutral environments where rights
and mutual responsibilities are recognized, valued, and accepted.
Goals: The Trained Listening Partner’s (TLP) program will be an ongoing training process dedicated to producing effective listeners, advanced communicators and life students in the field of anti-discrimination, individual equality, and diversity awareness. In addition, the TLP hopes to embrace the Seton Hall community and create life long compassionate citizens.
Services TLP will provide:
-
Listening Stations in collaboration with the National Coalition Building Institute Response Team, in support to all members of our community in moments of crises.
-
Individual support to members of our community in areas of general discriminatory concerns. One on one time to be listened. A roster with all TLP current members will be publicized at the beginning of each semester.
-
Ally support in creating Safe Havens around the campus. Members will be identified by a symbol
-
Round Table discussions on Current Issues (Campus and Worldwide)
-
Facilitation and mediation services (Neutral Partners) by using the Controversial Issues Process (NCBI) Critical incident processing

Once gaining the prestige of receiving the Gold Star, the individual has completed all steps in becoming an advanced Trained Listening Partner. However, in order to maintain status as an official TLP, one must continue going through the minimum course requirement each year.
Individuals will be recognized with their certificates and advancement of stars at an end of the year banquet to take place each year in April.
Trained Listening Partners will not only receive certificates of achievement, but will have learned to become more compassionate and understanding citizens especially in the greater community.
