Chapel of the Immaculate Conception
Masonry Restoration
Masonry restoration of the existing brownstone has recently been completed returning the chapel to its original grandeur. Work included repointing, repair and cleaning of the brownstone. A new slate roof, copper flashings and gutters were installed at the entrance vestibule. In addition, new stone surrounds were provided at two of the main entrance façade stained glass windows as part of the chapel’s overall restoration.
Major structural cracks were discovered in the main supporting arch at the interior of the chapel. New stainless steel anchors were installed to stabilize the arch and cracks repaired. The two exterior buttresses which supported the arch were also unstable. These buttresses were removed and new reinforced concrete buttresses were installed. New sandstone was placed to conceal the concrete work and match the original building.
