Withdrawal Information
THINKING OF WITHDRAWING OR TAKING A LEAVE OF ABSENCE?
Deciding to withdraw from the University, whether for
a semester or for longer, is an important decision for any student. We
encourage you to make sure that you make an informed
decision, gathering all the information necessary about your options and
the possible consequences of your decision before you move
forward.
There are a number of questions you should ask and people you should
consult before deciding to withdraw. For example, what will happen to
your progress towards graduation from SHU or another institution? What
options other than withdrawing are available to you? What will the
impact be on your financial aid package? What will your financial
obligations be to the University or others if you choose to withdraw? To
help answer these and many other questions you may have, please consult
with the following offices:
- Your Academic Advisor
- Your Academic Dean
- Financial Aid Office (Bayley Hall, 973-761-9350 )
- Disability Support Services (Duffy Hall, 973-313-6003)
- Counseling Services (Mooney Hall, 973-761-9500)
- Dean of Students (University Center, 973-761-9076)
- Registrar’s office (Bayley Hall, 973-761-9374)
If after collecting all of the information, you decide that it is in
your best interest to withdraw from the University, please do the
following:
If you are withdrawing or taking a leave of absence for medical reasons:
- Meet with the Dean of Students (University
Center, 973-761-9076).
- Provide written documentation from your treating
medical provider of your medical situation that indicates
recommendation that you should not continue in classes. Note:
medical withdrawal assumes that a student has or will be absent for
at least three (3) weeks of classes; any other situation will be
reviewed and considered by the Dean of Students.
- Print out and complete the top section of the
“Request for Withdrawal” form. Bring the form to the Dean of
Students (University Center, 973-761-9076).
- Return your laptop to University Computing
(Corrigan Hall, 973-313-6181).
- If you are a resident student, meet with Housing
and Residence Life (Duffy Hall, 973-761-9172) and make arrangements
to check out of your room within 72 hours.
If you are withdrawing or taking a leave of absence for any reason other than medical and/or if you do not plan to return to the University for the following semester:
- You MUST withdraw before the end of the
withdrawal period, the end of the 8th week of classes. Any
withdrawal after that date will not automatically result in grade of
WD. For withdrawal requests subsequent to the withdrawal deadline,
the student must contact the professor of each course, as well as
the Associate Dean, to request a grade of WD on a “Course Adjustment
Form.”
- Print out and complete the top section of the
“Request for Withdrawal” form and take the form to the Academic Dean
of your college/school for a withdrawal meeting. Once you have
obtained the signature of your Academic Dean, take the signed form
to the Dean of Students (University Center, 973-761-9076) for an
exit interview.
- Return your laptop to University Computing
(Corrigan Hall, 973-313-6181).
- If you are a resident student, meet with Housing
and Residence Life (Duffy Hall, 973-761-9172) and make arrangements
to check out of your room within 72 hours.
