Financial Aid - Verification
The Federal Processor
determines who is selected for verification. If selected by the federal
processor, the student is notified on the Student Aid Report (SAR). The
Financial Aid Office also has the authority to select files for
verification if there appears to be a conflict of information. If a
student's application has been selected for verification, the student
will be notified via e-mail and/or written mail and must submit
additional documents. The required documents will be listed on the To Do
List on Myweb.shu.edu.
If you need a copy of your tax return, call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040.
Ask for a 1722 letter or tax transcript. This form will be sufficient in
lieu of an actual copy of your tax return. All tax documents should be
signed, in addition to, including the student CWID on the top of each
document.
If selected, there are negative consequences resulting from failure to
complete verification within specified deadlines. All students are
strongly encourage to submit documents requested within 2 weeks of
notification from the Financial Aid Office. Please refer to the
notification of verification written mail or e-mail for specific
deadlines. We are required to inform you of these consequences. Our goal
is to help you to avoid them. Federal verification regulations require
the following:
-
Federal financial aid cannot be disbursed until verification is
complete.
-
Verification may result in corrections that change your award
amounts and the deferment of tuition and fees.
-
Stafford Loans may not be certified until verification is complete.
-
Estimated financial aid awards may be removed if verification is not
completed within specified deadlines. Any deferred tuition and fees
become due immediately.
The Financial Aid Office
may require other documentation on a case by case basis for certain data
elements, such as child support, proof of separation or divorce, Social
Security/SSI benefits, veteran's benefits, or any other items deemed
necessary.
Corrections need to be made for information that is not accurate, which
could affect your ability to receive aid. If you did your FAFSA online,
then simply follow directions to make corrections. If you did the paper
FAFSA, then you will need to send your Student Aid Report (SAR) to the
Federal Processor for corrections. Updated Student Aid Reports (SAR) are
provided by the federal processor.
Corrections involving the Federal Processor must be made prior to
mid-August, 2008, slightly earlier for state grant programs. Students
that are selected for verification must submit all documents required in
order for financial aid to be applied to your student account. If
verification is not completed, to avoid late fees, students must submit
payment directly to the Bursar Office for payment of tuition, fees,
housing and meal charges.
