Driver Qualifications

Authority to Drive a University Vehicle

Clearance to drive any University-owned or leased vehicle is contingent upon authorization from the Compliance Office.  Clearance is based on the University’s validation of an applicant’s compliance with specified driver qualifications.  These qualifications include validation that the applicant has a current driver’s license and an acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR), in accordance with criteria outlined below, and has fulfilled applicable driver training criteria.  The applicable driver training criteria vary, as indicated below under Driver Training.

Licensure

Possession of a valid U.S. or Canadian driver’s license for at least one prior year is required for authorization.  All drivers of University vehicles are to be at least 18 years of age.  It is required that an authorized driver have at least one year’s experience as a licensed driver.  No first year student will be permitted to drive a University vehicle unless the Compliance Office approves a written request from the program director.

Motor Vehicle Record Check

Authorization is contingent upon review and approval by the Compliance Office of an applicant’s MVR.  Applicants to authorized driver status are required to complete and submit a Driver’s License Abstract Request

Training

After completion of MVR check, to become an authorized driver, applicants must successfully complete the online defensive driving course assigned by the University.  This will be prompted and linked directly through a Lotus Notes database.  This requirement will be waived for applicants with a current valid Commercial Driver’s License.  Additional courses may be required for specific driving privileges, including 15-passenger vans.  The Compliance Office can provide information on current training criteria and processes for completion of training.

Accidents and Violations: Impact on Authorization

No student, faculty member or employee will be authorized to drive a University vehicle if he/she has a record of two violations, two accidents or a combination totaling two, within a two-year period.  Authorized drivers are required to report all violations or accidents to the Compliance Office.  This applies to occurrences involving private vehicles as well as University vehicles, and it applies to any violation or accident occurring at any time, regardless of whether it took place in the course of University business.  DUI conviction will result in permanent revocation of status as an authorized SHU driver.
