Portable Electric Heaters

Because Open element electric heaters cause numerous fires every year, they are not allowed in University owned buildings. Owners of open element heaters will be advised to remove them immediately and request a University approved electric heater.

The only approved type of electric heater is a University-issued oil filled heater. If you feel there is insufficient heat in your area, please contact Facilities Engineering at 973.761.9454, so that the situation can be investigated. If the temperature in the space is below 68 degrees Fahrenheit during the day and/or below 65 degrees Fahrenheit at night, and the heating system in place cannot immediately be adjusted to raise the temperature, an electric space heater will be issued by Facilities Engineering until the heating system in place can provide the area with adequate heat.

PLEASE NOTE: Exceptions will be a made for those individuals with a documented medical condition.
